WEDDING PHOTO ALBUM TERMINOLOGY
Here's some definitions that you might find handy as you seek to understand the often
confusing world of wedding photography and wedding albums in particular.
Book Bound Photo Albums (or Hard Bound) – Book bound wedding albums are actually
hard bound - just like the books you would purchase in a bookstore. Book bound photo
albums are radically different than the traditional “slip in” style photo albums that have been
popular for years and years. Book bound albums are often designed by a professional
Photoshop artist and usually have composite digital photo images printed directly onto
exceptionally high-quality pages via a professional printing process.
Coffee Table Books/Albums – Typically these are also “book bound” or “hard bound”
books like you would buy in a bookstore. Coffee table photo books and albums also have
professionally designed digital photo
images printed directly onto
exceptionally high-quality pages
via a professional printing process
using 100-lb laminated paper stock
and professionally bound hard
covers. Some have thinner paper...
it's all a function of the price you
want to pay. Like all wedding albums
Coffee Table Wedding Books can have simple covers all the way through hand-tooled
leather works of art. The interior graphic design layout can be simple or beautifully complex -
depending upon your budget, your choices and the photographer and design house you're
working with.
Flush Mounted Pages – Flush-mounting means that the print itself is mounted all the way
to the edge of the page. So the print itself is exactly the same size as the page it is mounted
on. Most often, flush-mounting also includes digital graphic design. That means each page is
designed using Photoshop or some other graphic design software. As with both book bound
and coffee table albums this means that the design options are nearly unlimited. At this time
flush-mount albums are very popular among brides. As for whether or not flush-mount
albums are better than traditional, who is to say? It’s just a matter of personal preference.
Magazine Style Albums – This usually does not refer to the type of binding or construction
methods, but to the style of page design. That is to say book pages that are designed and
laid out creatively, with a sense of elegance and glamor that isn't typically available with
traditional “slip in” wedding albums. Think of the creative layouts applied to many published
magazines and you’ll get a sense of what can be done with a magazine style. In other words,
you’re not getting a magazine for your album, but a hard bound book with creative layout
characteristics of a magazine.
Panoramic Book Images – Images that are cropped or otherwise designed to fit across a
span of two pages in a printed photo book. Some of these books can be 16 to 20 inches
wide... and even wider! Big bucks are often required for this type of wedding album!
Storybook Albums – These are any album of images that visually tells your wedding day's
story – usually laid out in chronological order. These can be traditional, book bound, Coffee
Table, magazine-style, etc.
Traditional or Classic Photo Albums – These are wedding photo albums designed for
slipping your printed photos into fancy sleeves that have been built to hold standard size
printed photos (4x6, 5x7, 8x10, 10x10, etc). Advantages and disadvantages? Traditional
